Mentra Labs / Open smart glasses platform

Plan upgrades for Mentra Live.

Mentra Live is a programmable smart glasses platform built around a camera, microphones, speakers, touch controls and the open-source MentraOS ecosystem. Droid Labs helps owners turn an idea—such as a hands-free assistant, accessibility workflow, private capture tool or field application—into a staged plan that distinguishes local device control from optional cloud services.

What can you plan for Mentra Live?

Custom AI workflows

Plan a task-specific assistant around MentraOS or the direct Bluetooth SDK, with explicit choices for hosted, self-hosted or offline processing.

Camera and hands-free capture

Design photo, video, streaming or inspection workflows with clear consent, storage, bandwidth and battery requirements.

Voice and accessibility

Explore transcription, translation, audio prompts and hands-free controls using the microphones and open-ear speakers.

Private mobile integrations

Build a companion iOS or Android app that controls supported hardware directly and minimizes dependence on proprietary cloud services.

Before implementation / 003

Start with the exact robot and outcome.

Firmware, edition, available interfaces and operating environment can change the recommended architecture. Droid Labs asks for the missing details, scores feasibility and makes the assumptions visible before proposing steps.

  • Mentra Live has camera and audio hardware but no visual display, so every proposed interface must use sound, touch, a paired phone or another output.
  • Record the phone operating system, MentraOS app version, connectivity and intended offline behavior before choosing an SDK path.
  • Camera and microphone projects need visible capture cues, informed consent, careful retention defaults and compliance with local privacy rules.

Common questions / 002

Planning Mentra Live modifications safely.

Can Mentra Live display text or graphics?

No. Mentra Live deliberately has no display. Droid Labs plans should use its audio, camera, controls and paired phone, or identify another compatible device when a heads-up display is essential.

Can a Mentra Live upgrade avoid Mentra cloud services?

The official direct Bluetooth SDK can give a companion iOS or Android app control of supported hardware without relying on Mentra-hosted cloud infrastructure. Any AI provider, storage service or network dependency still needs to be assessed separately.

Primary sources

Verify against official resources.

Droid Labs prefers official manufacturer documentation and maintained repositories. Always verify specifications and compatibility again before implementation.
